Punta Cana Airport breaks record of 8 million passengers

This December 24, the Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ) broke the record for passengers who have transited through that terminal, accounting for 8 million travelers at the end of 2022. During the last months, this air terminal has been experiencing a record in the reception of tourists. Just last week, the PUJ received some 574 flights.

Last year, according to figures from the Dominican Institute of Civil Aviation, 4,251,558 people traveled through this airport. The daily average of flights, during this year in the AIPC, has been from 70 to 75, which translates into almost 500 weekly flights.

According to data from the Airport, for the week of February 21 to 27 of this year they had contemplated the arrival of 472 flights, 6 more than the previous week. At that time, the airport had about 13 weeks over 450 flights and of these 3 had been over 500.

The AIPC also estimated to receive some 470 commercial flights in the week from Monday, April 25 to Sunday, May 1 of this year. In previous weeks the rate of flights in this air terminal remained between 450 and 490 flights.

According to the Ministry of Tourism (Mitur), the Dominican Republic achieved the visit of almost 7.5 million people in the first eleven months of this year, also generating US$7.8 million in foreign currency.

The Mitur also highlighted that last month was the best month of November in history, since the country received 571,354 tourists by air, 109,489 more tourists than those who arrived in the same month of November of the year 2019, which represents an increase of 24 percent.

This week the prominent tourism businessman and president of the Grupo Puntacana Foundation, Frank Rainieri, had assured that everything points to breaking the record of arrivals at the Punta Cana International Airport in one year. “We will go beyond 8 million tourists, God willing, which is an extraordinary number that we have never achieved, since this week we also had 574 international flights,” he said.
